Wellow School selected to take part in international arts festival

St Julian's School in Wellow was selected as one of only three primary schools in Britain to participate in the International Primary School Penguin Painting Project which is part of the Australian Antarctic Festival. It is the first time any school outside Australia has taken part in this project making this a very exciting opportunity for the children at St Julian's.
The penguins were made from MDF and once painted were returned to Australia. They are due to be on display at the MAC 2 Tasports Cruise Terminal on the shores of Hobart city where they will be viewed by over 30,000 visitors to the festival as well as appearing on television and in newspapers throughout Australia.
School Headteacher, Ruth Noall, said: "Due to the lockdown restrictions on movement and space the children couldn't paint these penguins together at school. Therefore the children had to collect the penguins from a drop off point, paint them at home, and then return them to be 'quarantined' before they could be packaged up for posting.
This was a rare and exciting opportunity and I thank our parent, Mr Meigh, for organising this for our school. Earlier in the school year the children had learnt about the Antarctica as part of their geography learning so this paint a penguin project was perfect."
