Why you should support your local, whole carcass Butchers this National Butchers Week

It's National Butchers week; a time to shine a light on local, traditional Butchers, the meat they sell and why you should support them.

One local Butchers shop, based on Knoll Farm just outside of Peasedown St John, is Somer Valley Butchers.

Having opened last July, the family-run Butchers already has received 5* reviews from its customers, as well as a nomination in the Countryside Alliance Awards as the "Best Butcher" in the South West.

The Butchers differentiates itself by selling all local products, sourced on their own farm and through local partners.

Manager Graham Heselton explains, "We try to keep everything as local as we can. Our beef is reared on our farm, our deli items are made in-store, and we support other local farms.

What that means is our customers can always ask us exactly where their meat comes from. We can also guarantee superb quality and high animal welfare".

The Butchers take a whole-carcass approach, where they use the whole animal rather than just the popular cuts of meat that supermarkets demand in high volumes.

"Using the whole carcass is a more sustainable way of butchering, ensuring every part of the animal is utilised. Cutting out wholesalers means we can offer better value to our customers, and a fair price to our partner Farms.

Taking the whole carcass approach does mean we may, on occasion, not have every prime cut available, but we are always happy to advise and offer a suitable alternative", Graham adds.

As well as championing sustainability and animal welfare, offering customers an outstanding level of service is central to Somer Valley Butchers.

"Whether our customers want to know where their meat has come from, or what cut will be best for what they plan to cook, we're always on hand to help.

Our service, as well as our products, is what makes us stand out. We've received an overwhelming level of support from customers since opening", Graham said.

The Butchers is open Wednesday to Friday 08:30-17:00 and Saturday 09:00-16:00. Visit their website to learn more, or follow them on social media
