Campaign for road safety measures in Midsomer Norton : Petition started by seven year old to force cars to slow down

By Susie Watkins 24th Apr 2022

The campaign to get road safety measures put in place in and around an estate in the heart of Midsomer Norton now has a petition started by a worried local seven year old.

And the petition already has close to 200 signatures.

The petition HERE: Was started by a young brownie from the 4th Midsomer Norton group for her 'speaking out' badge. She lives locally with the slogan Driving Faster Can Be A Disaster. She will be taking her petition to B&NES Council, in the hope they will listen to her local drive for change.

Chloe's petition aims to cut speeds in and around the Withies estate in Midsomer.

But Nub News has heard that speeding is not confined to these roads, and nearby residents on Riverside Gardens say they have been campaigning since the 1970s for traffic slowing measures. They had tried to get speed bumps put along the road, which leads to a riverside playground, put along the road when they moved in but were unsuccessful.

As Nub News reported, a renewed campaign is underway to cut the speeds of cars through Withies Way with a warning that if something is not done, it is a matter of when, not if, a child will be killed. You can read that report HERE: The local councillor was told by developer David Wilson Homes that it was not their responsibility to put in speed bumps as it would prevent B&NES taking ownership of the road. The council in turn has told him they are reluctant to install speed calming measures in a residential area.

Meantime Nub News has been sent another video of a near-miss at the entrance to Withies Park

The incident, from September last year shows a family with a dog walking on the pavement at the entrance to the Withies Bridge. They are nearly hit by a vehicle when it mounts the pavement. The incident was reported to the police and the driver was fined for his actions.

The local who sent us the video said: " This video highlights the need for some kind of physical barrier or speed restrictions to protect the residents from traffic on our estate. "
