Wombling in the sunshine : Biggest litter pick to date by local team in Radstock

By Susie Watkins 26th Feb 2021

They call themselves The Wombles - litter pickers from the local Zero Waste social page who have been out collecting rubbish.

Today (February 26) they were out collecting down Mill Road near to the Proper Job shop in Radstock.

They have posted this photo on their social page captioned : " We think this may be our largest pick in the smallest space so far. Fifteen amazing hard working Wombles today including some new faces."

The litter pick today was led Laura Jardine, with each collection carried out under coronavirus safe conditions.

Meantime a new national initiative is taking social media by storm, called the Attenborough Movement, inspired by, as expected, the ecology broadcaster Sir David Attenborough.

It is based around the idea of eight, being that the natural historian was born on May 8.

The idea is that the public collect eight plastic bags , small or large , of rubbish when out for walks. Photos of what rubbish is collected are then posted on the page.

The organiser writes : " I truly believe this would give him the best birthday present in a lifetime to see hundreds , perhaps thousands , who knows might even get to millions of people holding up their bags of rubbish saluting Sir David in recognition and accepting we as a human race must make this change together."
