An 81-year-old farmer has admitted animal welfare charges after up to 80 cattle on his land at Hinton Blewett were found knee deep in mud with smaller animals competing with adult animals for small amounts of hay and drinking rain water from puddles in fields full of rubble, scrap metal and plastic waste.

John Hasell appeared before Bath Magistrates on September 5 where he pleaded guilty to six charges of animal welfare issues and one charge of allowing animal carcasses to be accessed by birds and animals.

Midsomer Norton Library could turn over a new leaf on late book fines under proposals being considered by Bath and North East Somerset Council's cabinet member responsible for the service.

Bath and North East Somerset Council could scrap fines for late books if Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for community services, approves a single member decision report recommending the removal of late fines charges.
