A special Christmas message from the Mayor of Midsomer Norton

At Nub News we believe in keeping it local, so we approached the local mayor for a special message for residents for Christmas.

The Mayor of Midsomer Norton gave us his thoughts on the town, why he is so proud of it and the people who live there.

"This year more than most we stand in need of a spirit of goodwill at Christmas, and it made me think it might be a good idea to send a few Christmas cards in the name of the Mayor next year; something we haven't thought of doing before. A thought to bank and remember.

But the need for cheer and goodwill was answered for me personally by finding myself undertaking the pleasurable duty of recommending a couple of volunteers from Midsomer Norton for recognition by the B&NES awards system, which looks to present certificates each year as a symbol of the appreciation of the community for those who give of their time and energy for their fellow citizens. On reflection, we are blessed in Midsomer Norton with an impressive number of  public spirited, compassionate people who carry on volunteering, year after year. Without them, all the good ideas of councillors and others would come to nothing.

Without them we would not have our Town Fayre at midsummer, which gave so much pleasure this year because of the lovely weather (yes, it can happen!). We would not have the regular cinema screenings at the Palladium/Town Hall; nor National Theatre live broadcasts; nor Paradis Trio lunches; nor social afternoons at Welton Rovers every month; and so on.

It is probably not wise to try to be comprehensive in this list, because some are inevitably missed out and perhaps a little offended, which is the last thing one would want. However, as one who has organised litter picks for the best part of a decade now, I will give a final mention to those who come on our spring and autumn picks, and even more to those who pick litter regularly near their homes throughout the year, making our environment so much more pleasant and welcoming.

Thank you to all those: and a very well deserved, peaceful, and even merry Christmas to all Nortonians."
