Coming into its second year, the Welding Skills Bootcamp is part of a scheme supported by the Department for Education's "Plan for Jobs" initiative.

This FREE 15-week course is aimed at getting adults who are either unemployed or are looking to upskill into more meaningful employment, giving those who run their own businesses another skill to add to their offerings as well as working with employers who want to upskill their existing workforce.

Classes take place once a week at the Somer Valley Campus in Radstock to ensure that they are accessible to learners who have other commitments whether in life or work. It combines theory with practical sessions taught by lecturers with a combination of over 30 years of industry experience in our professional and fully equipped workshops.

MIG or MAG welding is taught with coded welding to a BS9606-1 testing standard. We also give learners the opportunity to gain a CSCS card as part of the course.

Learning covers the following as well as much more:

-understanding the hazards associated with welding

-demonstrating good workshop practice

-recognising welding symbols and joints and setting these up independently

-producing a T-fillet

-recognising welding defects

-evaluating own welds to BS9606-1

-identifying and changing consumable parts and purging

-how coding welding works in industry

-producing welds to a coding standard

-overhead, vertical and down-hand position welding

Whether you are looking to upskill your existing workforce or yourself, employ new staff either currently or in the future, or would be interested in talking to our learners about your company and the practical side of working within welding, they say they would love to hear from you.

Our next cohort will be starting the course in September 2022, and the college is looking to engage with both learners and employers now.
