Banks in crisis - latest figures show 54 branches are closing every month - do you recall when Radstock had its last bank ?

If you are new to Radstock you may not even be aware that it once had a bank.

It had a NatWest bank in the centre of town.

The bank was first mooted for closure way back in 2010, but it was reprieved then and stayed open until 2014, when the doors finally shut, in spite of a spirited local campaign to keep it operating.

Since the doors closed at Number 5 at The Street, Radstock has been bankless.

The rate and frequency of banks closing has been worrying many of those who represent customers - often older people - who do not use on line banking. One idea which was mooted was the creation of bank hubs, spaces shared by several different High Street lenders. to help communities that have seen all their bank branches close.

But the take up of hubs has been woefully slow, only four hubs have opened so far, while an average of 54 UK branches have shut each month since January 2015. Age UK said older or vulnerable people could struggle with online banking. The charity's research suggests 27% of over-65s and 58% of over-85s rely on face-to-face banking.

The problem is only getting worse, without places also to deposit cash. In Frome, the HSBC bank on Market Place is to close on June 6, as is the town's NatWest which will shut even sooner on May 11.

The future of the Barclays in Market Place is also in doubt. Barclays will close 54 branches, and 14 more closures were announced earlier this month.

However Nationwide, which is also in the market square has promised to keep all its high street branches open at least until 2024.
