Chief Inspector visits Radstock fatal stabbing scene - telling the public nothing is being ruled in - or out

Local News by Susie Watkins 1st Aug 2022

A murder investigation is ongoing following the death of a teenager in Radstock, with the Chief Inspector saying investigating teams were keeping an open mind - and for others to do the same.

Police and paramedics were called to a car park in The Street at about 6.40pm yesterday (Sunday 31 July) after a 16-year-old had been stabbed during disorder involving a number of people.

The victim was found critically injured and despite receiving emergency treatment at the scene by officers and paramedics, he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin has been informed.

The ambulance service said that they had sent multi medical professionals . They told Nub News "We were called at 18.40hrs on Sunday 31 July to an incident in Radstock. We sent an operations officer, a doctor, a rapid response vehicle, two double-crewed land ambulances and an air ambulance".

Overnight two people have been arrested. An 18-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman remain in custody.

Today ( August 1) forensic officers were combing the roads and looking into drains - Nub News understands that they are still looking for a possible weapon, although officers have not confirmed this.

The whole area remains sealed off with officers posted on Fortescue Road and the Wells Road and the area where the incident occurred - alongside the library - closed off and kept behind a screen.

At 3pm the scene was visited by Chief Inspector Ronnie Lungu who passed on his condolences to the victim's family and friends, many of whom were gathered there to pay their respects.

He was keen to stress that officers want to keep an open mind : " At the moment we are not clear about the circumstances of this tragic death, we are waiting for the evidence to determine exactly what happened.

"At the moment we are trying to piece things together so we want any information from anyone who heard or saw anything to come forward and to speak to my officers. "

He did not confirm whether officers have yet recovered any weapon.

" It is a rolling investigation at the moment and we are keeping an open mind, gathering as much information as we can. We want to reassure people in Radstock that this is indeed still a safe place and will have lots of officers in the area to give them that reassurance."

Adding Radstock is a really safe area so I am very surprised something like this has happened

Nub News spoke to several local people, including two of the best friends of the boy who died, who expressed deep sadness and shock. The youngsters, who brought flowers to pay tribute to their friend, but who did not want to give their names added, you never expect anything like this to happen.

Another parent of a child whose daughter knew the deceased said, it was a huge shock for her child and how awful it was that something like this could happen in the small friendly town. " It is just a terrible terrible thing to have happened, here of all places."

DCI Mark Almond, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: "Our sympathies go out to the victim's devastated family at this horrendous time for them. Specially trained officers continue to provide them with support.

"We know yesterday's events will come as a massive shock to the community, but we'd like to reassure people that a thorough investigation into what happened is underway.

"People can expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days as we conduct reassurance patrols and complete necessary enquiries following this appalling incident.

"Incidents of this nature are rare, but it is only natural that people living in Radstock will be concerned and upset. We urge anyone who is worried speaks with those officers on patrol."
