There is an unusual For Sale advert up in Midsomer Norton - a pre-loved item, with many, perhaps thousands, of prior owners.

The Somerset & Dorset Railway Heritage Trust is looking to re-home one of its vehicles after years of sterling service.

The 22 ton 'Bagged Cement' Van was built in 1964 for Blue Circle Cement, and donated to the Trust over ten years ago, since which it has acted as a store for spare railway parts. The Trust has recently undertaken a review of the wagons and carriages at Midsomer Norton station and concluded that a number of items, such as this van, no longer fit within the Trust's plans to recreate a prototypical freight train from the 1950/60s.

The van is complete and in a very good overall condition. Despite being stored in the elements open to the harsh Somerset winters, it only requires a repaint to bring it back up to its former glory.

But if you are thinking this would make a great tiny home, then you might be disappointed.

The major snag is that it is very difficult to insulate, so they would be horrendously cold during the winter and extremely inefficient to heat. A spokesman said: " So entirely possible, but extremely unpractical. You do see a lot of the bodies of wagons like these turned into sheds though - The Redan Inn in Chilcompton has one in its garden."

The Trust has recently purchased two British Railway coal wagons and are looking for donations to bring them up on site. Trust Chairman Stephen Lacey said: "These two British Railway's 16 ton 'Mineral Wagons' were once a common sight on the S&D. At the coal industries peak in the 1960's, hundreds of these wagons could be seen in the collieries sidings in Midsomer Norton, Radstock and Writhlington on a daily basis. Obtaining these two wagons are a positive step towards the Trust's ambition to re-create a typical freight train of the era. Now we just need to raise some funds towards the cost of transporting these wagons from Swanage."

Donations can be made to the heritage trust via the red button below. Visitors are welcome to visit the station at Midsomer Norton and view the progress made so far in their fantastic restoration work. The next event at the station is the Diesel Gala on March 7th and 8th when there will be a visiting class 26 Diesel locomotive as well as the resident shunters.
