Local artist, Alessandra Alexander, has been successfully shortlisted in an international open art competition organised by Wells Art Contemporary (WAC). Her intaglio print, 'Ash tree obligate 6', will be included in an exhibition to be held in Wells Cathedral from 30 July to 28 August 2022.
This year's competition received over 3,200 submissions from 49 different countries. After much deliberation, the judging panel has selected 123 artworks, showcasing an array of disciplines and mediums across painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, mixed media, sculpture and installation. These will make up the carefully curated exhibition in a dedicated gallery in the Cathedral cloisters.
Paddy O'Hagan, WAC chair, says: "Contemporary art is produced by artists who are living in our time. And let's face it – this is a particularly testing and fascinating period of history. The exhibition reflects that in all its multifaceted glory."
Alessandra works from her studio in Coleford and her pieces are inspired by ecology and the local environment. "My current work is on the disastrous disease of ash dieback which has really hit the Mendips hard," she explains. "The piece selected is of a little moth that is obligate - i.e. relies totally - on ash trees.
"It is an intaglio print, carved out of mountboard with a scalpel and I like to think that in a similar way to the moths inside the bark of trees, I am excavating a fibrous material to make these inky images."
In addition to the gallery of artwork, 29 site specific installations will be studded throughout the Cathedral and its grounds. These have been selected by the panel for their synergy with the architectural, spatial and spiritual aspects of Wells Cathedral. And with the awe-inspiring interior, monumental scissor arches, stunning medieval stained glass and the quiet, contemplative gardens, there has been plenty of inspiration.
"The installations provide a captivating reinterpretation of Wells Cathedral," concludes Paddy. "Having seen all the proposals and artistic impressions, I can't wait to see everything in situ. It promises to be a truly immersive experience. "
Wells Art Contemporary exhibition at Wells Cathedral is free to visit. A virtual exhibition will also be available to view for those who are unable to visit the Cathedral in person
