Local diabetes support group, which usually meets in Coleford, wins national award
A dedicated children and families group close to Radstock have scooped an Inspire Award from leading charity Diabetes UK.
Julian Collins , together with his wife Annabel and Emma and Mike Clarke, set up the group over 10 years ago after both their children were diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.
He said: "We are an incredibly supportive and inclusive group which really enjoys getting together and sharing experiences and expertise through all the challenges. It's wonderful to be acknowledged in this way for the work we do."
The award recognises a local group which has worked tirelessly to support people living with diabetes in their area as well as positively promoting the campaigns, initiatives and services of Diabetes UK. The Mendip group who, pre-lockdown, met monthly at the Children's Link Centre in Coleford were also very active organising an array of events - from Frisbee Golf to Pantomime trips to Tech talks. Currently the group, which usually has around 20 youngsters with diabetes as well as their siblings and parents at their regular meet ups, is maintaining contact over Facebook. However, all members are looking forward to a time when they can be together again. Phaedra Perry, Diabetes UK South West Regional Head, said: "The truly inspiring members of the Mendip Children and Families Group do a brilliant job of showing how living with diabetes doesn't have to stop you from tackling anything. They are an amazing bunch of positive, creative and all-round inspirational people. Our warmest congratulations go to them all. "Through our Inspire Awards we thank our hard-working volunteers for their contribution and shine a light on the positive difference they make to the lives of people living with diabetes in the south west."
