The local amateur boxing club has a new owner, although he will be familiar to fans and those who go to the popular club, since Sean Jenkins was already the boss.

Jeff White has been with the club for the past five years, helping to secure funding and promote Norton Radstock Amateur Boxing Club. But now he has officially handed over the running of the group to Sean.

The Club wants to thanks locals who have helped them survive and thrive, often in difficult circumstances.

Neither of them has ever taken a wage from the club, which is run as a not for profit enterprise and the cost of the classes is kept deliberately low.

The pair are both former boxers, and had success competing with England Boxing, before turning their gloves to coaching.

The club based at Coombe End in Radstock, runs training sessions for boxers, a very popular mid week ladies boxing session, along with some classes for people who have Parkinson's Disease which is unique in the community, and has visitors coming across from Frome to build their resilience and strength.

Jeff said: " Radstock has a long history of boxing, and in the 50s, 60s and 70s, there were lots of successful names who came from around here. Many of the families have surnames which will be familiar to the boxing world, and have boxed over generations."

He is especially thrilled that the ladies boxing night is so popular. He said: " We started it and it just took off, it's a great class and really well attended."

The team would like to thank the local Curo group for funding which helped them start up and the Big Local which has also given them a grant. They were also helped by money from the Active Citizens Fund, money that has been seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Jeff said: " We would like to see more people at the club. Sean works so hard making it a great local club for everyone."

The club has been widely praised with one reviewer saying: " My son has been training here for 11 months and the coaching he receives is top drawer. Everyone is pushed and worked hard and there's a great togetherness among the members. My son really enjoys going."
