Outstanding service to the community deserves to be recognised. Consequently, the Rotary Club of Midsomer Norton & Radstock were delighted to recently honour Roger Winsley of Chilcompton with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) award. Named after the founder, the PHF award recognises exceptional Rotary service, as well as service by non-Rotarians that more than meet the criteria. Past Rotary Club President, Patricia Naish, presented the honour.

Roger Winsley was born and grew up in Midsomer Norton and started work as an apprentice carpenter in his father's construction company. He continued training to become an estimator/quantity surveyor and progressed to become a Member of the Chartered Institute of Builders.

32 years ago Roger started his own construction company, Winsley White Ltd., specialising in the provision of affordable housing in rural locations. Following his retirement last year, the company is now being run by two of his three sons.

Roger's first experience of service clubs was with the local Round Table which he joined in 1972 followed by the 41 Club. He was elected a member of the Rotary Club of Midsomer Norton & Radstock in 1992 and has worked diligently over the years in a number of capacities. Roger conveyed "As a member of the club I have chaired and served on all club committees. I was elected President in 2006/7 when we celebrated the clubs 50th anniversary and the 25th year of twinning with our French Club Libourne Saint-Emilion. It was a great surprise and honour to be presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship award by the club."

Befittingly, Roger's wife, Jane, was honoured with the PHF award in 2019 for her 35-years of work raising funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care.
