Radstock-born nurse is honoured in New Year's list - her father and uncle both local firemen

There was a big Radstock connection to one of the people honoured in the New Year's honours.

Nurse Mary Buck has served the Swanage and wider community for more than 30 years, opting out of retirement to aid the Covid-19 vaccination programme in Dorset.

Mary, who was a Smith before marrying, and is now 70, was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to the NHS.

But Mary, who became a voluntary member of St John Ambulance at the age of ten, was born and raised in Radstock.

She grew up on Bath Old Road.

Mary told Nub News: " I grew up in Radstock but left to train as a nurse 50 years ago!

"I was a member Norton Radstock St John Ambulance as was my aunt. And my dad and uncle were (Radstock) firemen. "

Modestly Mary added: " I feel this award should be for all the retired nurses and doctors who are back to work to enable the vaccination program to run. I have enjoyed working with and teaching young people who are now doing such great things with their lives. "

In recent years, Mary has become a committee member on the Swanage Community Defibrillator Partnership in which she helps trains residents to use the life-saving equipment.
