Slimmers in Midsomer Norton are continuing to shift the pounds during lockdown - successfully losing more than 40 stones in the last three months.
Members of the Tuesday evening Slimming World group usually held at Midsomer Norton Methodist Church have carried on losing weight through the coronavirus pandemic, thanks to new virtual groups. The service allows members to stay in control of their weight loss journey while still enjoying the support of other members through online Zoom sessions.
Consultant Rachel McDermott said: "When we were faced with temporarily closing our groups
I was distraught over the prospect of being unable to support my members properly.
"But we very quickly came up with a way of offering the same service, just from my sofa to theirs!
"We still have just as much fun and the weight losses we are seeing are incredible. We really are looking forward to leaving lockdown lighter!"
It's believed that the average adult is gaining an average of 1lb a week while living in lockdown, meaning many will already weigh around a stone heavier.Obesity has been found to be one of the biggest risk factors leading to hospitalisation for those with Coronavirus.
Rachel said: "Losing weight at any time is hard but it's even more difficult with the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.
"Our groups are testament to the fact you don't need to suffer alone though. If you want to join like-minded people, to never go hungry and feel happier and healthier, we're here for you.
"If nothing else we're there for each other every week. The sense of community in our groups is second-to-none and we would welcome anyone to come and join us."
