Children living in Peasedown St John had the opportunity to take part in a Summer Reading Challenge during the school holidays.

Run by B&NES Council's Library Services, children across the local authority could take books out from their local library, and when they did, they'd automatically be entered into the challenge.

Peasedown Community Library Operations Manager and local councillor, Karen Walker, said:

"The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to enjoy the benefits of reading for pleasure over the summer holidays, providing lots of fun as well as helping to prevent the summer reading 'dip'.

This year's Summer Reading Challenge theme was Gadgeteers, which was created in partnership with the Science Museum Group and illustrated by top children's writer and illustrator Julian Beresford.

The challenge inspired children's curiosity about the world around them and encouraged them to feed their imagination over the summer holiday. They were boggled by brilliant facts, gazed at the stars and inspired by tales of creativity and invention."

Last Saturday morning, children in Peasedown St John who successfully took part in the challenge were invited to visit the village's community library to collect their medals and certificates.

Gavin Heathcote, Chairman of the Peasedown Community Trust charity which runs the library on behalf of B&NES Council, added:

"Congratulations to Alba and the other children who took part from Peasedown St John. Reading is an essential life skill, so encouraging our youngsters to read from a young age, for fun, is important.

We've got a huge selection of children's books at the library, so even though the Summer Reading Challenge is over we look forward to seeing children and their parents visit us again soon."

Peasedown Community Library is located at The Hive Community Centre, Bath Road, Peasedown St John, BA2 8DH, and is open:

• Mondays: 11am – 3pm

• Wednesdays: 2pm – 4pm

• Saturdays: 10am – 1pm
