Sweet spot - why the baking business is booming under coronavirus

By Susie Watkins 12th May 2020

The Sugar Store on the Wells Road - which would usually be readying for a bumper wedding season - is busier than ever under coronavirus - with the owner believing it is because we all need a bit of a treat.

So while there are none of her usual orders for traditional cakes such as for weddings and christenings - there is a new huge demand for treatboxes and smaller cakes.

The Sugar Store has been baking celebration cakes for the local community for 14 years.

But now the owner is rushed off her feet making cup cakes and also serving up to a new band of bakers, taking to cake making - for perhaps the first time.

When Nub News went along to check on the business during its first week re-opened, professional chef Sarah Reid, who started the company when she wasn't able to get the quality cake decorations she wanted for herself, said she was almost unable to keep up with demand.

In her 14 years of running the business she has never known it so busy.

Sarah told Nub News: " We are very busy. People still want birthday cakes. They might be having smaller cakes but they still want one. While I am making lots and lots of cakes, people are also coming in because they are baking their own birthday cakes for their families."

The resurgence of home baking has meant lots of new orders from lots of new customers and she is now selling flours and sugars - something they have never done before.

"We are selling loads of flour, sugar, butter, all the baking ingredients, bread flour, wholemeal flour, granary.. baking powder, dried fruit glace cherries.. everything I would normally use (for baking). I have in volume and we are bagging it up in smaller amounts.

" We are just adapting to what people want. We are selling lots of cup cakes, it is something to look forward to, a treat - we all need one of those."

The Sugar Store is now open 9-2pm Monday to Friday 9- 12 on a Saturday. Telephone : 01761 420090.
