A Clutton-based specialist painting and renovation firm is coming to the end of its work restoring the famous Miner's Wheel.
Superior Finish Painting and Decorating Ltd was asked to do the work because of their experience in dealing with heritage sites.
The owner of the business, David Davies, has been working on the wheel, removing years of staining and pollution with a jet wash, and then resealing the base and pillar with a sealant.
Now the business of painting the wheel, with specialist
and environmentally friendly paint is underway. The company, which has been running for 25 years is a specialist heritage painting company, but amazingly David also has experience of miners wheels. He said: " This is the second I have done. I come from Pontypool and I renovated their wheel too, so you might say I have some experience." The crew were also keen to point out that the scaffolding had not fallen over late last week, but had been let free because it was hitting the structure and was potentially damaging the plinth. David said: " It couldn't have fallen down because it was secured, but it was cut free because with the high wind it was banging against the wheel, so it was taken down in the night." The company will take work on for all kinds of projects but has a lot of experience in Grade II listed buildings.David said: " Right now we have a lot of work on which is good, but who knows when the Coronavirus really takes hold. Maybe people won't want to open the door to us."
