Three new houses could soon be built right in the centre of Midsomer Norton, just two doors down from the Town Hall.

Bath and North East Somerset Council granted planning permission for the three terraced houses to be built on the disused car park next to the TSB Bank on Silver Street on April 19.

The houses would all be three storey, three bedroom homes, with bike parking and six car parking spaces — although documents submitted with the application state there will be "little need for future residents to be reliant on the private car."

The application states: "The site is located in very close proximity to local services and amenities including the High Street which includes the various employment and leisure facilities, schools, supermarket and a GP surgery. Trips to these locations among others will most likely be undertaken by foot."

Applicant Andrew Talbot submitted the planning application almost a year ago, but changes to the design had to be made to keep the designs in character with Midsomer Norton.

The site has sat empty and unused for years but this is not the first time the council has given the go-ahead for the site to be developed.

Planning permission was granted in 2021 for a block of four flats on the site and a similar development of three terraced houses had been granted now-expired planning permission in 2014.

In their report recommending planning permission be granted, council planning officers said: "The existing disused site offers little to the character and appearance of the site and surrounding area. There is therefore opportunity here to improve this area."

They added: "It is also noted that planning permission has been granted within the last two years for a two and a half storey apartment block. This apartment block was taller and elevations incorporated multiple gables. The proposed application presents a similar design and smaller scale which is considered as a benefit."

The developer will have three years to build on the site before the planning permission for the homes expires.
