On Saturday at the Somerset Farmers Market at The Hollies there was one stall which (sadly for Nub News) sold out before the end of trade.

The Chilean taste stall is a unique experience, even more so since the trader who runs it is now ONLY coming to Midsomer and it is the only market locally where people can enjoy the delights of genuine Chilean cookery.

Dishes were brought to the Midsomer Norton market by the charming Catalina Banados who has turned her passion and love for her native cooking into a new business.

Catalina started working for herself late last year and was initially doing several farmers markets, as well as home deliveries from her base in Bristol.

But now she sticks to her city work and only comes to Midsomer - which means that you will have to wait until the next Somerset Farmers Market - on October 3, to catch her again.

Forty seven year old Catalina is Chilean - a descendant of Italian,Spanish and Indigenous peoples - and uses cooking as a way to express affection, to evoke memories and to heal.

She told Nub News: " I learnt how to cook from the women of my family who passed on their recipes to me. For me cooking is a creative, sensory experience that allow me to explore, discover and take risks. I never get bored of cooking."

She was working as a chef in restaurants, cafes and bars when she first moved to England over two decades ago but adds: " Now, the moment has come to pursue my dream of running my own business. I want to share some of my family recipes as well as the new recipes I'm currently working on."

She is a particular fan of the Midsomer Norton people. " I do markets outside Bristol because I like small markets and I like to bring the South American flavours to other places and people. I had a lovely feedback from Midsomer Norton people and I like the fact the are willing to try different foods."

Her particular recommendation to those trying South American food for the first time are her empanadas ( Chilean pasties).

For the uninitiated empanadas are small pasties with different fillings, but also on her menu , chimichangas (black beans, spinach and cheese in a tortilla wrap) gluten free options of frittatas and arepas (flat bread corn flour). She also adds in spicy salsa of crunchy tomatoes with herbs.

And if you don't want to eat her food immediately, she adds: "Some of my food can be frozen so then is easy to keep it in emergency when you haven't got time to cook. And it is usually loved by kids, they like the food and is healthy for them."
