Water refilling stations - non existent in Radstock

A push to get people to ditch plastic, by filling up their water bottles at filling stations, is not getting any support at all in Radstock.

The refill scheme is being promoted by Bath and North East Somerset council and has been welcomed by a receptive Midsomer Norton.

But, according to the company which is promoting the refill scheme, there are currently no business takers in Radstock.

By comparison there are currently six refill stations in Midsomer, and 24 in nearby Frome.

According to the Environmental Audit Committee consumption of bottled water has doubled over the last 15 years, with over seven billion plastic water bottles used each year in the UK.

The Refill Revolution, which is based in Bristol, is pushing hard to get more local businesses and councils involved in the scheme which offers an App so people can find out where their nearest water station can be found.

According to them every minute one million bottles are bought around the world and that figure is predicted to increase by a fifth by 2021.

Leading councils in Devon, including Exmouth, have been praised by the company for their commitment to ending the use of single use plastic.

Radstock has yet to make a commitment to any environment plans, whereas Midsomer Norton has just agreed to put the climate crisis on its statute book.

The refill company claim that if just one in ten refilled just once a week from a water station, rather than buying a bottle of water, 340 million plastic bottles a year would be removed from landfill.
