Welcome to a new business into Holly Court in Midsomer Norton which has said goodbye to plastic, offers single purchase sales and is committed to local.

The fruit and vegetable - and vintage shop - Shaws opened on Tuesday (January 4) and is co-owned by a partnership who are happy to sell single pieces of fruit or vegetables, and will not be packing any of them in plastic.

Shaw's is welcoming customers, however small and has made that a unique selling point. You are most welcome to come in and just buy one apple, one orange (although there is currently a special offer on for marmalade makers) whatever it is you need - and no more.

It is zero packaging too - and alongside the fruit and vegetables, local eggs and soon to be local milk, and Somerset Brie, they are selling vintage goods.

You might recognise one of the owners who lives in Camerton and teaches yoga classes. Yvonne de la Bretoniere who has been teaching locally for over 20 years.

She told Nub News : " Lots of people were talking about buying loose vegetables and loose fruit. We get a lot of elderly people too who just want to buy two bananas, or the ingredients for some soup.

" It is perfect for that... They can just pick up one of something, like a potato. It is a nice thing and it is no waste. We do have bags, but we like to promote that people take what they buy home in their own shopping bag."

The only plastic in store is biodegradable type which they have to wrap grapes, but so far they have not needed it.

" All the other bits and pieces are vintage, " she explained. " So you can buy a piece of furniture if you want... we are feeling our way. I think the most important thing is that people keep coming back to us. A new shop people come along because they are curious, it is exciting, but we would like to see them come back every week, again and again.

" Then we can keep it alive - I know a lot of people from my classes who do not want to buy a whole plastic bag of wet leeks.. they just want to buy one. We are here for them."
