The local community radio has been covering how everyone can make themselves more environmentally friendly - while still keeping fashionable.

The programme interviewed Lucy Tudor from the Midsomer Norton Zero waste social group and Carole Faithorn, works in the Barnardo's Charity Shop in Midsomer Norton.

One new trend that is relatively new is the single use T shirt, a shirt, often given out as a reward for a charitable endeavour, which is then thrown away after just one wear. Lucy told these garments are responsible for some of the biggest landfill dumping, particularly overseas.

Lucy told the programme that according to her latest figures only one percent of all garments are recycled. This can be because they are made of mixed fibres and the processes used to break these fibres down means that they cannot often be re spun, and instead are made into a variety of items including insulation for car doors.

Many items donated end up being shipped abroad, but Lucy said that of the 50 million items of clothing which arrive in Ghana every week, 40 per cent is of such poor quality that it cannot be worn and has to be dumped, again.

Carole told the programme about her experience about Make Do and Mend and how Midsomer Norton is charity shop "heaven."

Figures from the USA estimate that the average person throws away around 37kg of clothes every year. And globally, an estimated 92 million tonnes of textiles waste is created each year and the equivalent to a rubbish truck full of clothes ends up on landfill sites every second.
