By Susie Watkins 16th Nov 2020

Radstock councillors were urged to lend their weight behind the continued campaign against plans to build a gas plant near Welton Primary School.

Protestors told the Radstock Town Council meeting (November 16) that although B&NES have passed plans to build a gas generator at the rear of Midsomer Norton Enterprise Park. " It is not a done deal, we will continue to fight this."

They were asked to write to the energy company behind the proposal Conrad Energy, to communicate their displeasure at the decision made by B&NES, and asked to put an anti gas plant poster at the Radstock Hub.

The online meeting was told that the pollution impact from the three generators was the equivalent of starting up 400 cars and that it will impact health across all of Midsomer Norton and Radstock.

" This is a not a small scale issue, " said one of the protestors who was brandishing a sign against the plans. "It is a much much bigger issue, which will have an impact on the whole community. " They added that the argument that the gas generator plans were an environmentally- friendly option as: " Nothing more than a greenwash."

Radstock Town Council, which has formally declared a climate emergency, was told that the plant will create 3.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide and Radstock would "bear the brunt of this cloud if it came up the Somer Valley."

Cllr Elizabeth Derl-Davis told the meeting: " It is going to linger in the air. The Centre of Radstock will be unliveable in, it would be terrible for all the old people who live in the town. It will be nothing more than a death sentence."

Cllr Bruce Shearn said: " We need a clear way forward on this, when we declared a climate emergency, we made it clear we did not support fossil fuels. We don't want this anywhere near us."

Councillors resolved to communicate their " Intense displeasure" at the plans. They agreed to sign the open letter already drafted by opponents to the gas generator plans, to write to Conrad Energy and to write B&NES.
