Radstock butchers Phil Day changes opening times to combat coronavirus

Radstock's family local butchers, Phil Day, will be opening only from 7am until 1pm from today (March 25) to allow staff to completely deep clean the shop and prepare orders.

That in spite of a burglary earlier this week which saw thieves make off with three of the four charity boxes.

The police now have the CTTV footage of the theft, which left staff shaking their heads at the selfishness of stealing from charities.

The butchers was forced to close to deal with the impact of the crime, although the thieves did not make off with any stock.

But people of Radstock were left without this favourite and hard working shop as it closed to clean up and re arrange counters in case of any contamination.

The butchers which has been a stalwart of the town for many years, would make regular deep cleans, but now with coronavirus those will be carried out every day to reassure customers.

They currently have plenty of supplies of meat, vegetables and fruit, but Phil said that deliveries have now become a little uncertain.

The things he is running low on - chicken and mince meat. Phil said: " I think people have been stocking up for the freezer. But we have pretty much everything else. We will be open for these new times for people to shop or they can call us and we will do our best to get local deliveries out."

Once the shop is closed to the public the whole shop, all counter spaces, chilled cabinets and freezers will be deep cleaned daily.

Phil said he will do his best to keep Radstock supplied for as long as possible.

The change to opening hours comes as another Radstock business faces a heartbreaking dilemma. You can read about Bike-It here, the story of how being self-employed causes additional trauma for small businesses during the coronavirus outbreak
