The start of the New Year signifies hope and change for many. Resolutions are in full swing and optimism, even during the darkest, shortest days, is aplenty. Whilst the end of the year is a time for reflection the beginning of a new one offers the chance for a fresh start.

Boris Johnson's landslide win before Christmas felt as though New Year had come early. His decisive victory delivered the calming certainty and confidence that we have been lacking since the referendum owing to a Parliament that sought to undermine those that it was elected to serve. The Prime Minister's pledge for Britain post-Brexit offered clarity, stability and prosperity, the requisite framework to bolster us as we enter a new year – and decade – free from the shackles of the European Union (EU).

The end of our membership of the EU and austerity brings great scope for opportunity. Aside from forging our own trade deals there will be in increase in public service expenditure resulting in more nurses, teachers and police. £5 billion will be invested into improving broadband, ensuring that the whole country is on a level playing field, encouraging entrepreneurialism and industry. The national living wage will increase. Some roads and hospitals will either be built or up-graded and local councils will benefit from extra funding for social care, high street regeneration and homelessness.
