The latest column from Radstock MP Jacob Rees Mogg : Breakfast clubs

This week, I received some correspondence from Kellogg's who were writing to let me know that their Breakfast Club grants programme for Schools has just reopened.

Kellogg's are offering grants of £1,000 to school breakfast clubs in North East Somerset and a limited number are available so priority will be given to schools that have 35% and above of children in receipt of pupil premium funding.

The generosity of Kellogg's supplements the action already taken by the Government to curb childhood hunger. Between March 2018 and July 2021, the National School Breakfast Programme (NSBP) for schools in disadvantaged areas supported up to 2,450 schools to establish and develop breakfast clubs and to sustain them in the longer term. The Government is now spending up to £24 million in a two-year contract to continue its support for school breakfast provision until July 2023.

All participating schools will receive a 100% government subsidy for Breakfast Club Provision until 31st March 2022. The subsidy will then be reduced to 75%, allowing schools to contribute 25% from other funding streams. All pupils in participating schools are to be offered breakfast supplies at no cost to them or their parents.

Research has shown that providing a healthy school breakfast at the start of the school day can contribute to improved readiness to learn, increased concentration and improved wellbeing and behaviour, which is why I am delighted to share this information.
