Colliery Explosions- Local History Talk and Demonstration

RADSTOCK MUSEUM'S BYGONE DAYS TALKS NEXT PRESENTATION:

COLLIERY EXPLOSIONS- THE MUSICAL This presentation takes a look at the science involved in unplanned underground explosions, and includes controlled demonstrations. Richard Ellam will explain how the conditions for gas and dust explosions underground originated, and what was done to best prevent them. The presentation promises to be very insightful and interesting if a little noisy at times.

The talk and demonstration takes place at the Somer Centre Midsomer Norton on Tuesday April 2nd at 7:30pm. £5 admission. Raffle. All funds raised go to Radstock Museum Charity Number: 1151573.

Somerset Coalfield Life at Radstock Museum wishes to acknowledge that COLLIERY EXPLOSIONS have tragically taken the lives of many coal miners locally in past times. Probably the most well known of these was the 1908 explosion at Norton Hill Colliery whereby the following men and boys died:

Charles Burge aged 32 years, examiner and shot-firer.

John James Ashman aged 34 years, collier.

Andrew Brooks aged 27 years, collier.

William Doughty aged 20 years, collier.

Ernest Jones aged 23 years, carting boy.

Frank Jones aged 41 years, collier.

Stanley Jones aged 16 years, carting boy.

George Maggs aged 20 years, incline man.

Henry Sage aged 14 years, examiner and shotfirer's boy.

Gilbert Winsley aged 25 years, incline man.

Radstock Museum respectfully remembers this terrible loss of life and remembers all those who died in our local coal mines.
