Midsomer Norton Town councillors heard an update on the long standing plans to develop the derelict Welton Bibby and Baron factory site on Station Road.

A representative from the developers said it was now "crunch time" for the planning application, which has been in the offing for several years.

He asked councillors to tell the builders what the town wants and needs so that they can put that into the detailled plans.

He told them: " We particularly want to make sure we have the full potential and are making the most of the area. We are just putting together the details, and we need to gather information about what is needed and what is viable."

Current plans, which are still at the outline stage include 95 houses on the site, along with a supermarket. When questioned about the size he told councillors: " Not a super store, more like a Lidl-sized store. Just one single store."

In 2018 planners refused permission to clear the old factory site but after an appeal, Midsomer Norton Retail Estates were given outline permission, although at the time it was thought the plans were for 200 homes.

The current developers are the stock-market listed Henry Boot Construction company, which has been building homes for 130 years and is headquartered in Derbyshire.

Councillors, who were first alarmed when it seemed the plans, which have not yet been made public, included designs for more than a thousand homes - suggested that the development should include provision for a care home.

Cllr Steve Plumley said: " Midsomer Norton really needs a care home. We were told before that plans would include a care home, but they came to nothing."

The development stage of the plans can be amended, with a details about what the site may include expected to be formally put into the B&NES planning department within the next couple of weeks.

Welton Bibby & Baron - the largest manufacturer of paper bags, carrier bags and printed paper on the roll in the UK relocated manufacturing to Westbury in 2013.

- Welton Baptist Church on West Road in Welton has applied to make some internal and external alterations including building a new southern entrance extension in place of the existing kitchen lean-to.

An application has been made to build a detached house and garage on land between Somer Ridge and Monger Cottages on Monger Lane in Midsomer Norton,

That is a re- submission of planning application reference number 20/00856/OUT.
